By Mass. Treasurer Deb Goldberg
I welcome the Year of the Dog, along with my friends in the Asian-American community. As we enter this new year, I join you in reflecting on the past, while looking ahead to the future, with resolve and optimism.
In my role as Treasurer, I focus on ensuring economic stability for all Massachusetts residents. This past year, the Treasury’s Office of Economic Empowerment announced open enrollment for SoarMA, which provides a free seeded college savings account to low-income middle schoolers in cities around the state. My hope is that more families commit to beginning the New Year with a college savings account for their children that will one day ease the burden of paying for higher education.
Last year, I also had a new initiative which studied how to increase diversity on corporate boards. This study showed that increased diversity leads to greater success for both their businesses and their employees. The “Bringing Diversity on Board” report will help corporate leaders develop the tools they need to provide opportunities for everyone, strengthening our businesses and our economy. As Treasurer, I remain committed to making sure that our boardrooms are as diverse as the communities we live in.
As an appointing authority for the Asian American Commission, I have worked to elevate the impact that Asian Americans have throughout our state. My goal has been to extend the reach of the Commission to all parts of Massachusetts and to support the important advocacy work that benefits your communities directly.
The AAPI community has a long and rich history within the state of Massachusetts. Communities such as Boston’s Chinatown and Lowell have many local and small community businesses that help our economy thrive and keep our cities culturally vibrant. Engagement from your communities is incredibly valuable to me and my office, and I look forward to fostering this relationship with all of you once again in the coming year.
I am also very excited for another year serving as your Treasurer and continuing my work of empowering families, helping to create opportunities all over the state for those who have been underrepresented for too long. On behalf of the Treasury and myself, I wish everyone prosperity in your business ventures, success in your careers and a Happy Lunar New Year to all!
